Standing Desk Motor Types Explained

Almost every electric standing desk spec sheet lists a motor count, but few listings explain what that number actually changes about how the desk feels and performs day to day. Here's the practical difference.

Quick answer: dual-motor desks lift more evenly, handle higher weight capacities and tend to last longer under daily use than single-motor desks — worth the extra cost if you're using the desk heavily or with a loaded-up setup.

Single motor desks

One motor drives the lifting mechanism, usually through a synchronised belt or rod connecting both legs. These are cheaper and lighter-duty — fine for lower weight capacities and infrequent daily adjustments, but more prone to slight unevenness or strain as they approach their rated limit.

Dual motor desks

Does motor count affect lift speed?

Dual-motor desks aren't automatically quieter than single-motor ones — noise depends more on the specific motor and gearbox design than on how many motors are fitted, so check reviews for noise complaints regardless of motor count rather than assuming dual motors solve this.

Which should you buy?

If you're using the desk with a heavier setup — a large monitor, a laptop dock, extra desk accessories — a dual-motor desk is the safer long-term choice, even if it costs somewhat more upfront. For a lighter, occasional-use setup, a well-reviewed single-motor desk is a perfectly reasonable choice.
